Booking Your Accommodation: Hotel or Resort for Your Dream Vacation?

Excitement builds as you prepare to embark on your Riviera Maya adventure. Now comes the crucial decision: where should you stay—hotel or resort?

But what sets them apart? Let's delve into the basics for a clear understanding.

Hotel: A commercial establishment that offers lodging to travelers, and sometimes to permanent residents, often equipped with restaurants, meeting rooms, stores, etc., accessible to the general public.

Resort: A destination primarily chosen for relaxation and pleasure, often providing vacationers with restful environments and recreational facilities.

With this foundation, we can deduce that while a hotel provides lodging and perhaps supplementary services, a resort is essentially a more enriched hotel experience.

Opting for a Flight + Resort package when visiting the Riviera Maya is incredibly convenient. This region of Mexico is renowned for its all-inclusive resorts, offering features like 'All You Can Eat/Drink'. Some resorts are expansive, encompassing an array of amenities such as:

  • Kids Clubs

  • Various pools catering to families, toddlers, and adults only

  • Bowling alleys

  • Shopping malls

  • Tennis, paddle, and football courts

  • Sports bars

  • Nightclubs with themed parties

  • Numerous restaurants

  • Theaters

  • Recreational activities

  • Spa & Gym facilities

  • Pharmacies

  • Souvenir shops

  • And much more...

Evidently, resorts are equipped with everything you could desire, enabling you to unwind at the beach throughout your vacation. If you're the type of traveler who seeks relaxation without a care in the world, a resort is undeniably your optimal choice.

However, if you're the kind of traveler who seeks more than just the comforts of a resort, I'd recommend paying close attention to your choice of location. Many of these resorts are situated in remote areas, requiring transportation—usually taxis (as Uber and Lyft don't operate here)—to access the city center and the main attractions, which are often at a considerable distance. To ensure you make the best decision, consider these recommendations when selecting your ideal location:

  • Clarify your preferences and destinations: Reflect on what you want to experience and explore.

  • Evaluate distances: Compare the distance between your chosen resort and the places you intend to visit. Remember, the region is divided into four primary areas: Costa Cancun, Cancun Hotel Zone, Riviera Maya, and Tulum.

  • Prioritize proximity: Opt for a location that minimizes travel time to the attractions and tours you're keen on experiencing.

**Note that some 'Must-See' places might be quite distant, making it impractical to spend extensive hours away from your hotel. Make a wise choice—you're reading this article for a reason!

And now, if you're the type of traveler who craves an authentic experience—immersing yourself in the local culture, savoring regional delicacies, and basking in the sun on the beach—I wholeheartedly suggest considering booking a hotel or a vacation rental, depending on your group size. For larger parties, a condo or a beachfront villa could be ideal. Opting for a stay in the city center is paramount. Some prime locations to consider are Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum in Aldea Zama, which provides proximity to both the beach and downtown areas.

Both Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen offer an array of charming boutique hotels. For those heading to Tulum, I recommend exploring vacation rentals, many of which even feature private pools.
